A New Direction

Since the cancellation of my classes in Amador County and my move to the San Diego area I have begun preparations to steer this site in a new direction.  I am no longer offering personal instruction, due to an extremely busy schedule, but I do not want to stop helping people with my knowledge of Tai Chi and Qigong.  Therefore, I am going to be working on turning this site into a free online learning resource for anyone who is interested in making use of the information I share here.  This will be a very slow process, because of my current time constraints, but I will do my best to keep the transformation moving forward.

What does this mean?
It simply means that I will not be posting information about physical classes.  Instead, I will be posting instruction videos here and I will eventually post a training schedule that will guide beginners from beginning exercises to more advanced ones.  As I mentioned before, this will be a very slow process and I appreciate your patience.

All of this information will continue to be available for free, so if you like what you see, please support this site by visiting my online health store (Andrew.PureTrim.com), finding the products that will make a difference in your life, ordering them, and using them consistently.

I hope this site becomes a valuable resource for everyone who is learning Tai Chi and/or Qigong and I wish you all the very best in your training.

To Your Health,
Andrew Plitt

New Dojo Pictures

This month the Pine Grove Karate Dojo moved to Jackson and began holding classes.  Today's morning Tai Chi class completed the first week of Tai Chi training at the new dojo location and we would like to share some pictures of the new facility with you.  :)

Here is the sign that we have up on Hwy. 49

This is the driveway leading up to the new Karate Dojo

Heading up this driveway, turn in the second parking lot on the right.  We are very excited about the large parking lot for training outside on days with nice weather.  We've had two classes outside so far and it has been amazing.  :)

The smaller portion of the building in front is the indoor training area.

Here is what it looks like on the inside.

We are thrilled to have this new training area and we hope you will come join us for classes here.

There have been some rumors that the Karate Dojo in Pine Grove closed, but the truth is, we just moved the Karate Dojo to Jackson and we are continuing to offer Tai Chi classes at the new location.

Help us spread the word about our new location, and stop by to try out a Karate or Tai Chi lesson if you live in or near Jackson.

Tai Chi Class Warm-Up Video

I have had some students request a video of the warm-up we do in class so they can use it at home to warm up before training.  It took me a little while to get around to it, but I've finally finished it and I hope you all find it very helpful.  Enjoy.

Pan Gen Qigong Video Series (23 videos)

After several weeks of working on this series it is finally finished and available for everyone to enjoy.

As with the other video series we have posted, the first several videos in this series walk you through each stationary and moving posture of Pan Gen Qigong.  The last 6 videos are follow-along videos that contain no instruction and are simply meant to make it easier for you to schedule a video into your day, to make practicing easy to time and accomplish.

Pan Gen Qigong (roughly translated as "Turning Foundation" Qigong) is for developing internal power and a strong root for internal martial arts training (such as Tai Chi).  However, the benefits of developing internal power and a strong root extend beyond martial arts training into everyday life.  It is believed in traditional Chinese medicine that ailments are a direct result of imbalanced energy flow through the body.  Because this Qigong set places a great deal of importance on developing your internal energy and circulating it through your body, and the postures aid in directing the energy to break up blockages, this Qigong set can easily be used for health purposes, as well as martial purposes.

For the internal martial artists, the stationary postures aid in developing your root while stationary and the moving postures help you maintain that root while walking in a particular pattern.

I hope you all find this series and this Qigong set useful and I hope you enjoy practicing it as much as I do.  Enjoy!

Foot & Ankle Strength, Stretch, and Balance Qigong Video

Here is a video of a short, simple exercise that helps strengthen and stretch the feet and ankles.  It's usually practiced after an extended standing Qigong session, but it is excellent for those who wish to improve their balance, loosen up first thing in the morning, or cool down after a run/standing workout.  We hope you all find it useful and enjoy it immensely as you practice.

8 Pieces of Brocade (Ba Duan Jin) Qigong Video Series

We just posted another Qigong video series on YouTube and this time it's for a Qigong set that is considered to be one of the most popular Qigong sets practiced around the world.  There are many versions and variations of the movements in this set, but they all work on the same principles and are considered very beneficial for health.  It is believed by many that this particular Qigong set was developed by the legendary Chinese General, Yue Fei, to keep his troops strong, healthy, and battle ready.  People all around the world now enjoy these exercises to stay fit, strong, and flexible.

In this video series the first video gives you an introduction and explains how the series works.  The next 8 videos each describe one of the 8 movements in this Qigong set.  The last two videos are follow-along videos that are silent, except for quiet chimes that alert you when it is time to change moves.  We hope you all find this series very helpful and useful in your daily exercise routine.  Enjoy!

Zhan Zhuang Qigong Video Series

This is a very exciting update about the latest video series we posted on Youtube today.  This series in unlike any we have posted before because it is a follow-along Qigong set for daily practice.  The first video in this series is the instructional video that explains the movements, postures, breathing, and focus for "Standing Like a Post Qigong" (Zhan Zhuang Qigong), but the other videos include no instructions and are silent excpet for soft chimes that let you know when something is changing (This allows you to stay focused while meditating, without having to peek at the video to see if the posture has changed).  Each of the follow-along videos is set for a different time interval for holding the Zhan Zhuang posture (the first one starting at 1 minute and each subsequent video is a little longer).  This way, one may begin by practicing the 1 minute video daily, until it becomes easy, then they can progress to the next video, and so on.

For those of you who have not heard of Zhan Zhuang before, it is a standing Qigong practice that is considered one of the most important and most foundational Qigong practices for health and for the internal martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan), Xingyi quan, and Bagua Zhang.  It is believed to be one of the best energy cultivating Qigong exercises and is used to help people develop their root and therefore improve their balance.  Maintaining the Zhan Zhuang structure over a period of time helps develop awareness of your body that will cause you to recognize tension in your body of which you were previously unaware.  It will build a habit of holding a body structure that is not only more efficient in martial art movements, but more efficient in daily activities.  This structure is also said to open up the body's primary energy channels and break up any blockages in energy flow, which is one of the main sources of its health benefits.  The relaxation also calms the mind and the deep breathing massages the internal organs to help increase circulation to them, thereby nourishing and cleansing them more efficiently.

We are very excited about this video series and the opportunity to share a simple exercise that you can follow along with and enjoy on a daily basis.

A Thought for the Day

When learning Tai Chi and Qigong do not get caught up in the desire to learn the next move or the next technique.  Spend time doing what you already know over and over again.  When you practice this way you will begin to develop a true understanding of what you are practicing; Only then you will be ready to learn something new.

Study Chinese Martial Arts in China

Some people dream of studying Traditional Chinese Martial Arts (TCMA), including Tai Chi and Qigong, in China, but don't know where to start.  When I was planning to go to China to study TCMA I didn't have anyone I could turn to for advice about where to go or what to expect.  I literally just found a website for a martial arts school, saved up money by working while in high school and jumped on a plane three months after turning eighteen.  It was a very exciting adventure, but unfortunately the school I went to, in spite of having good martial arts training, was not a very good school in other respects.  Even though I learned a great deal, and I still think fondly of my time training there, I wish I would have known that there were other schools that I could have attended.

The second time I traveled to China I decided to go to Kunyu Shan Shaolin Martial Arts Academy, a school about which I had heard good things.  When I first arrived I decided I would only stay at Kunyu Shan for a week to see if I liked it, and at the end of that week, if I was not impressed, I would go elsewhere.  The first day I was there I just observed classes to see if they met my expectations.  The first class I observed was a Qigong class taught by a distinguished looking master that everyone called Master Guo.  By the end of the class I was very impressed, and by the end of the week I was hooked.  The training, the environment and, most importantly, the masters were exactly what I was looking for.  I had never met such devoted martial artists in all my life up to that point.  I ended up staying at this school for a year, studying under Master Guo, and by the end of the year I didn't want to leave.  I only wish I had known about Kunyu Shan when I was planning my first trip to China.

If you have a dream of traveling to China to study TCMA, but are not sure where to start, take heart.  It is easier than you think to get there.  The school I attended during my second trip, Kunyu Shan Shaolin Martial Arts Academy, is an excellent place to train and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in studying in China.  The training is top-notch and it is a truly life changing experience that I think everyone should try at least once.

Below are some pictures of the Kunyu Shan Shaolin Martial Arts Academy.  More information is available at www.chinashaolins.com.  If you have any questions about attending this academy I would be happy to help in any way that I can.  You can also contact the academy directly by clicking here.

Important Update for Qigong Seminar on 1-5-13

Here's a quick update. Please be sure to bring a thermos with hot water and really warm clothes for afterwards. After practicing this Qigong set it's important to rest and drink plenty of warm water. There will be an hour or so after the workshop where the participants are welcome to rest for a while before leaving. Qigong has different effects on different people. Some people feel very invigorated afterwards and others want to take a nap. This set especially can make you really tired when you are first learning it because the different exercises tend to knock loose toxins that are stored in the kidneys and other body tissues. I would rather have you all rest at the dojo for a bit than to try to drive home when you're really tired.  So feel free to bring a blanket just in case.   I hope you're all ready for a really relaxing and refreshing experience!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
More information about this workshop and future workshops is available on the Workshops and Seminars page.

January 2013 Qi Gong Workshops in Amador County

In January of 2013 two, weekend Qi Gong workshops will be available in Amador County.  The focus of these workshops is to teach as many people as possible simple Qi Gong routines for health that have been used in China for centuries to maintain healthy, strong, flexible bodies.

The first workshop will be held on Sat. Jan. 5, and will be focused on "Deer Qigong."  This form of Qi Gong is part of the "Wu Qin Xi" or "Five Animal Playing" Qi Gong set.  The Chinese developed the Deer Qigong routine to mainly focus on balancing and strengthening the kidneys, but many of the exercises are also good for balance; coordination; and back, core, and hip flexibility.

The second workshop will be held on Sat. Jan. 12, and will be covering the "Ba Duan Jin" or "8 Pieces of Brocade" Qigong set.  This set is very popular all over the world for its simplicity and the safe nature of all the exercises.  This Qi Gong set can really be viewed as a whole body tune-up, with exercises that help improve range of motion, strength the body, improve balance, improve circulation and balance the body's energy flow.

More information about these workshops and their location, time and price of attendance can be found on the new "Workshops and Seminars" page.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Update on the 2013 World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day.

Great news!  We just added another workshop to Amador County's World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day celebration.  From 11:00 to 11:30am Sensei Rodney Peoples will be giving an introduction to breathing exercises that are used to cleanse, balance and recharge the body's energy systems.  These breathing exercises come from Sensei Peoples' martial arts training, which is predominately in Japanese styles, and offer a different perspective on these types of exercises than that which is generally seen in Chinese Qi Gong.  This is sure to be an exciting and informative workshop for all who attend.

If you would like to know more about Amador County's World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day 2013 celebration, please visit our World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day page.

2 Students Earned Their White Sash in Tai Chi Today

Today at 5:00pm two students began the test for their White Sash rank.  One student has been training with me for about 10 months and the other has been training with me for nearly two years.  Both have put an incredible amount of time and effort into their training and it was very obvious during the test.

During the test they were required to show proficiency in the following:
  • Yang Tai Chi 24 form
  • 5 directional stepping
  • Zhan Zhuang Qi Gong
  • Tai Chi Qi Gong set
  • and more...
At about 6:30pm the test was complete and both students had passed.  Below are some pictures of them receiving their sashes.

2 Students Earned Their Yellow Sash Ranks in Tai Chi

It has been over 6 months since they tested for their white sashes.  Six months filled with hard work, sweat, perseverance, and dedication to  practicing the same things over and over..... and it has paid off.  The two students who earned their Yellow Sashes today have truly earned this new rank and I'm very proud to have helped them reach this point in their training.

The skills that are required to earn a yellow sash include:
  • Knowing and being able to perform the first part of the traditional Yang Style Long Form
  • Learning 10 basic Tai Chi stepping sets that enforce many basic moving patterns of Tai Chi
  • Rocking Qi Gong Sets that begin to prepare a student many aspects of pushing hands and sticking hands practice
  • New stance practice routines that help strengthen the legs and coordinate body movements
  • The 8 Doors, or fundamental moving concepts, of Tai Chi.
  • And more...
Both of these students have been training with me since the beginning of 2011 and I'm very pleased with the progress they have made and the hard working attitude they have diplayed in their training so for.  It has taken them more than a year and a half to reach their second rank in our sash system.  This is not because they have not worked hard, on the contrary, it is because of their hard work that they have been able to reach this rank so quickly.  It is so important to make sure each skill is truly learned and not just briefly touched on and it can take a long time to get these things down.

Below are some pictures of the sash promotion ceremony.

In this picture my dad is giving me his old white sash and receiving his brand new Yellow Sash.
